“On the Other Hand” Instructions

The Concept: Players will compete in various activities requiring them to use their non-dominant hand.

Items Needed: Handouts (included as separate PDF files), a pair of scissors for each team, 4 crayons per team, pens/pencils, blank paper

Instructions: This game is a team game. There are 12 contests in the game with one requiring two players, so if you keep the teams to 13 kids or less, everyone will have a chance to participate. The game involves teams sending up a player (two players for #5) to complete a task using their non-dominant hand. So if a player is right-handed they should use their left hand to attempt the activities. When all players are at the front, advance the slide to show the task. Once all the players have the items needed for the contest, give them a countdown or a “Ready? Go!”

The screen will show whether the contest is going to involve writing, action or skill and the teams can use this to determine who to send forward. Writing tasks are obviously writing down words or numbers; skills involve things like drawing, completing puzzles, or coloring; and actions are things like cutting, throwing, and folding.

Players can use their dominant hand in most of the contests to hold the paper while they write, draw or cut with their non-dominant hand. There are three contests where the task has to be completed with only their non-dominant hand (#’s 5, 8, and 11) and you may want to have the players put their dominant hand behind their back to keep them from wanting to use it.

Scoring: It is up to you how you would like to score the game. One way to do it would be to give 3 points for the person done the fastest (as long as the task is done to the satisfaction of the leader), 2 points for second place, and 1 point for the person who did the nicest job of writing, drawing, cutting, etc. There’s a tiebreaker if any of the teams/individuals are tied after the last question.
